Aye Yi-yi!
Charlyne Yi‘s name didn’t register until we saw the accompanying photo on the Hideout calendar. Only then did we realize that this woman is one of the most underutilized actors ever in a Judd Apatow movie. Probably because those flicks are about boys with their heads up their asses.
Yi’s own notoriety received a jump when her faux documentary, Paper Heart, won a screenwriting award at the Sundance Film Festival. The film follows her around the country as she tries to find a definition for something she has never felt: romantic love. Michael Cera, playing himself, then enters the film playing the only character he knows (well, there’s another, and he should use it more).
Meanwhile, Yi wears almost too many hats. Primarily a comedian and actor, Yi is also a musician, and her Myspace page is filled with clips. People come to her shows expecting the funny, but come away impressed either way. (Thursday@Hideout with Neal Brennan and Lisa Laureta.)
