Not to slight Alexis Gideon, but people who saw the Chicagoan perform as half of rap duo Princess years ago probably went home thinking it was an elaborate farce, waxed about what great commentary it was on the joke existence of commercial rap, and bedded down for the night while smugly mumbling, “Stupid rap.”

It wasn’t a joke to Gideon. Muthafucka voiced-over a three-rapper battle on 2006’s Welcome Song as if the loser was gonna get gang-raped by a battalion of fungo baseball bats. And now, on the new Video Musics (Sickroom), he goes A/V on the bitch like some crackhead down by the way. Gideon has never gone about any of this with an iota of convention, which is why Video‘s six “chapters” (most of which are three minutes long) are sistered by an animated/claymated video on the accompanying DVD. Though we’re still waiting for the day when his Prince will come.
