High Places
(Thrill Jockey)

If you thought esteemed local label Thrill Jockey has been paying too much attention to outre performers in he last three years, consider High Places the sort of band you could take home to an indie rock mom.

Recalling the TV-room productions of mid-’90s Matador savant Solex or dilettante Lykke Li, Mary Pearson and Rob Barber’s music is like watching a cup of soup boil over in the microwave. Electrical pulses surge through “Gold Coin” and keep it uneven, while “The Storm” sounds like a toy chest come alive and practicing a parade route in the middle of the night. Occasionally, High Places’ self-titled debut tiptoes its ideas and gurgling noises (“Namer”) are no more than window dressing, but this is Thrill Jockey, after all. You’re gonna have to work for it.
