Be Your Own Pet
Get Awkward
(Ecstatic Peace/Universal)
How do you defend against a band who pop off “I don’t wanna grow up” in their second album’s second verse — especially when they aren’t Toys R Us kids?
Appearing: Thursday, June 12th at House Of Blues in Chicago.
Likable but eminently disposable, Get Awkward is a funnel of teenage confusion that lashes out via sundry garage punk. That it’s also so very bubblegum is why you’ll stick around for track two. Lead singer Jemina Pearl plays the 21-year-old brat to perfection, pining for adoration and attention while calling you a bitch. In the half-hour Awkward takes to get to its “free the beast” orgasm (and head home), Be Your Own Pet remain petulantly immature. If you don’t think they’re worth a third album, fuck you. Who needs you anyway?
