Baby Teeth

The news leading up to Baby Teeth’s release of their new album, The Simp (Lujo), on March 13th was that songwriter Abraham Levitan was now recording under his real name. Formerly, he preferred the monicker Pearly Sweets, which he apparently thought sounded more “New Orleans.”
Not very big news at all, really. Luckily for this Chicago band, the news after Simp‘s release will surely be that Baby Teeth have recorded an excellent second LP, the follow-up to 2005’s The Baby Teeth Album. Levitan and his fellow multi-instrumentalists Jim Cooper and Peter Andreadis (the live lineup also includes guitarist Michael Lyons), along with producer Blue Hawaii, rarely miss on The Simp. Songs like “Diaghaleve Was Right,” “Wolves” (is that a fucking Iron Maiden-ish dual guitar melody we hear?), and “Taste The Wine” are unapologetically catchy and unbelievably arranged. Maye they don’t want to hear this, but we can’t help but hear a less flamboyant, less mulleted, and certainly less gimmicky Scissor Sisters in much of the album.
No matter what, we can’t blame Levitan for wanting his real name tacked onto this one.
Baby Daylinger and The Bitter Tears open.
