The Asteroid No.4
An Amazing Dream
(Rainbow Quartz)
Veterans of the Psychedelphia scene in the City Of Brotherly Love, The Asteroid No. 4 return to their reverby fetish and drop out of the space/time continuum somewhere on the ’80s road to Britpop.
But trying to pinpoint exactly where these guys popped their heads up from “Eight Miles High” and found out about The Church and Stone Roses doesn’t matter as much as deciphering why Scott Vitt’s lyrical heartbreak has been underwritten so. Yes, “The Shepherd” sounds strangely like R.E.M.’s “Nightswimming” and 20-foot-tall vocal melodies threaten to detour any road to sensitivity, but Vitt has a very alarming ease in telling someone “You haven’t found love/you probably won’t” without hiding his own insecurity. Later, on “Hey Joe” rewrite “Into The Meadow,” he injects remorse (“Is this what I want?”) while being whisked away in a space folk tornado. Waiting around for another shoegaze revival might not be the best plan for The A4 now; wipe off the goggles and grab some coattails, boys.
