The Little Ones
Sing Song
(Astralwerks)

Trying to see if they could make themselves happy by singing, The Little Ones carefully constructed seven pop songs.

Appearing: Thursday, November 16th at Schubas in Chicago.

Now, one could argue Astralwerks already has one such band and they’re called Phoenix. But if you imagined Phoenix’s It’s Never Been Like That was three songs short of perfection, consider Sing Song the complement to an ass-long split EP. The island tones of “Cha Cha Cha” overdo it, but you can hardly blame them. Avoiding the smugness of the Elephant 6 bands, The Little Ones’ joy emanates not from a constructed façade but a frustration with dilapidated cynicism, screaming from their very souls that brighter days are ahead. The rise when “I don’t care” is sung during “High On A Hill” suggests mountain tops but pales next to the unrepentant giddiness of “Face The Facts,” which dismisses all else and begs, “why don’t we just leave it alone?” Amen.
