Silk Hurley Honored

| September 11, 2006

On Thursday, August 10th, the lush River North club Cabaret provided the meeting grounds for a truly curious mix of music industry folks. Everyone from hip-hop DJs (in town for The Global Mixx Retreat) to well-dressed label reps (invited by The Chicago Chapter of the Recording Academy) were on hand for this occasion dubbed “In The Mix.”

While the night was promoted as a “networking event”, most attendees remained among their respective cliques. Nevertheless, all present seemed to equally take pleasure in the soulful house being spun by DJ Skip, Lady D, and Maurice Joshua. And by the time the night’s guest of honor, legendary Chicago house DJ/producer/remixer Steve “Silk” Hurley, received his DJ Living Legend Award for House Music, everyone present converged.

Amid frequent applause, President and CEO of On The Street Promotions, Mary Datcher, introduced Silk with pride: “This man is definitely a fixture, not just in house music, but in Chicago music.” Sure, Silk has gone on to do production work for the “Oprah” show and other colossal clients, but I’m sure every DJ and house music lover in the building appreciated when he proclaimed, “No matter how many records I sell, I’m still gonna be a DJ.”
