Forget Cassettes

Forget Cassettes singer/guitarist Beth Cameron was probably more than happy to expand her band’s lineup from two members to three last year. Sure, the addition of multi-instrumentalist Jay Leo Phillips likely provided a whole new dimension to the previous drums-and-guitar two-piece, but she’s probably just happy to be rid of all those goddamn White Stripes comparisons!

Goes to show ya rock bands with two members will always be lumped in with Jack and Meg simply because of roster size. The Cassettes sound nothing like the Stripes, though. Salt (Theory Eight), the group’s second full-length, is a raging slab of angsty rock and punk influences a la Hüsker Dü and Sleater-Kinney. In fact, Cameron’s delivery often sounds like Kinney frontwoman Corin Tucker. Phillips isn’t the only newbie in the group, either. Original drummer Doni Schroader left the band in 2004 to tour with . . . And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and was replaced by new skinsman Aaron Ford, who makes his debut on Salt.Forgot Cassettes, along with The Grackles and City Electric, open for Blueblood.
