Arling & Cameron
Hi-Fi Underground
(Challenge)
Hup Holland, hup. Dutch electro duo Arling & Cameron roll a 12-sided die.
What begins as yet another retrolectro geek fest, Hi-Fi Underground unravels and reveals a charmingly eclectic spirit at its core. “Shake It” bounces like Air’s “Kelly Watch The Stars” before bounding into discoteca guitar pop on “I Don’t Need It” and do-dos on “Walk This Way.” But the real surprises come not on the kaleidoscopic “Open,” but Miss Lalavox’s girlish vocal over the otherwise folksy warmth of “Change.” Sassy backing vocalists turn “You Make It Real” into something of futuro Mitch Ryder, though “Games” stands out most as breezy, adult pop skywriting.
