Young Widows Review
Young Widows
Settle Down City
(Jade Tree)
Breather Resist fragments regroup for abrasive debut as Young Widows.
Following the amicable departure of Breather Resist singer Steve Sindoni, the remaining trio stayed together and moved guitarist Evan Patterson in front of the mic. But the difference isn’t in Patterson’s battlefield shouting versus Sindoni’s rabid, unintelligible barking, but the pace and sanity of Settle Down City. The stars are aligning at Jade Tree Records right now, and with new albums from Fucked Up and These Arms Are Snakes as evidence, stomping post punk rules the day over extreme hardcore and metalcore. Young Widows have advanced by dumping all the clutter that clogged Breather Resist’s packed veins and created space for “Small Talk” and “Bruised Knees” to draw breath into their lungs. Obvious reference points are The Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Detachment Kit, and Jawbox, though these Kentuckians push push push their way past math rock history.
