Lullaby Baxter returns
Lullaby Baxter
Garden Cities Of To-Morrow
(Boompa)
The Atlantic Records deal apparently ended, six-years later Lullaby Baxter release their second album.
Lullaby Baxter, which is both band and stage name of Angelina Iapaolo, breeze by on drowsy melodies owned by Iapaolo’s sultry, jazzy breaths. The strangely hyphenated Garden Cities Of To-Morrow can variably be Stereolab on Demerol, or in the case of Iapaolo’s cracking voice on “Dumptruck,” Rosie Thomas singing about being six and actually acting like it. The duller moments on Garden fade with listless open chords and all-too-accomodating rhythms, like watered down Stan Getz soundtracks. Her vulnerability wins out with “Cardboard Armoured Car” — “Could be I’m a pea brain/or some mosquito/No, I don’t feel like a monster” — or the lilting psychedelia of “Lord, I Won’t Fight You Anymore.”
