Heartland Turns 30!

Heartland Café, the iconic Rogers Park restaurant/live music venue, turns 30-years old this week. We say it doesn’t look a day past 21.

Michael James and Kathleen Hogan opened Heartland (7000 N. Glenwood) on August 11th, 1976 as a place for healthy eats and conversation. Through the years it has added a general store, theater, bar, and become a home for live music, athletic contests, and progressive political events. To commemorate the 30th anniversary, the Heartland will host a four-day celebration starting Thursday (August 10th) with a kick-off party featuring music by The Long Gone Lonesome Boys and the Outlaw Family Band, a group that got its start at the neighboring (and James and Hogan owned) Red Line Tap. Friday will be an anniversary reunion of sorts with conversation from the owners as well as friends and employees. Heartland related art, photos, and film will also be displayed, and DJ Leyva will spin. The following night traditional bluegrass act Sexfist will play the 30th anniversary dance party. The weekend will come to conclusion with a 5K run/walk Sunday morning and live jazz with Hamid Drake, Jebb Bishop, Jeff Parker, and Harrison Bankhead that night.

All anniversary events are free. For more information visit www.heartlandcafe.com.

To me the best festivals are the Roots fest & the Riverview fest. I can’t afford Pitchfork, LPazuzu, etc! Gimme plebian entertainment
