Cities Come To Town
Chapel Hill calling themselves Cities? Someone explain (and do it quick because the bassist just left the band).
Maybe they’re UNC students with Big Apple dreams (Interpol) or Keep Austin Weird online club members (I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness). Whatever it is, their curt, 10-track debut on Yep Roc takes a flyer on Joy Division-derived post punk without going for mock reverence. Forgoing the booming voice and chamber echo, Cities prefers flight to infernal chasms (“Headstream”) even if it gets a little dramatic and caught up (“Barricades & Garrisons”).
