World’s Latest Violins
Violins
Pink Water
(Contraphonic)
Michael Lyons, formerly of Clyde Federal, stokes the embers of Pavement and Luna.
There’s a tinge of melancholy in Pink Water that justifies the affair. Not that the bins aren’t already loaded with therapy-destined indie rock — Lyons’ lyrics for Federal often made Elvis Costello seem shy in comparison — but Violins have a way of projecting them so they sound, at the very least, like finding a reason will make a difference. Musically, the heavy chords of “No Talent For The Infinite” and “Sophie & Pierre” seem destined to break into a Crazy Horse jam at any moment, though the slanted wit keeps a sturdy, indie rockin’ undercurrent.
