Serena-Maneesh
(PlayLouderecordings/Beggars)
Debut album from this populous Norwegian noise outfit makes its official U.S. appearance.
Tempering sonic storms with sweeping atmospherics and the subtle repetitions of Krautrock, Norway’s Serena-Maneesh are in a fairly crowded swimming pool of My Bloody Valentine worshippers. But somewhere in frontman Emil Nikolaisen’s blood there’s a war going on between prog, punk, and electronic cells, leading to the chugging but soft “Selina’s Melodie Fountain” and ethereal “Her Name Is Suicide.” Partially recorded with Steve Albini at Electrical Audio in Chicago, Serena-Maneesh bears none of what many considered Albini hallmarks (big, live drums or stark, empty spaces) and occasionally feels lifted from some Ride sessions circa 1991. What differentiates Serena-Maneesh is, opposed the Kevin Shields/Control Everything School Of Production, a persistent and insistent push forward. While sounding occasionally like they’re on a loop (“Candlelighted”), the band are constantly exploring with blinding lights, oxygen masks, or diamond-toothed jackhammers.
