Naughty Timmons
Andy Timmons Band
Resolution
(Favored Nations)
Former Danger Danger (“Naughty Naughty”) guitarist Andy Timmons and his sack full of Joe Satriani licks hogs the spotlight on this “band” project.
It has proven difficult, since the early-’90s shredding onslaught, to find distinctive heroes in the guitar rock bucket. Gary Hoey was probably the last new face in solo shred before Steve Vai, Satriani, and Eric Johnson had to revive the form as G3. Timmons obviously paid a lot of attention during the shred/hair era, but not since. Fleet of finger but not of sensibility, the guitarist defies modern rock and attempts to use Resolution as a sort of classic take on where Satch was on The Extremist. He’s more lyrical than someone like Steve Vai though nowhere near as daring; the main fault throughout the 11-song disc (plus hidden track) is an inability to craft solid melodies out of this lyrical approach. He moves in that direction with gauzy chords on the title track, but mostly he’s just showing off.
