Apparently there’s only 10 or so musicians in Sunderland, England, and they’re in either The Futureheads, Maximo Park, or Field Music here. Sometimes more than one.
The confusing backstory involves one or all the members of these bands, as current MP drummer Tom English moonlights in Field Music. In fact, one of the best ways to approach Field Music’s self-titled debut is to act like you’re playing The Futureheads at about 16 r.p.m. (especially “You’re Not Supposed To”). Maybe it’s the northern accent, maybe it’s a culture of making things sound more minimal than they actually are. But buried beneath the expansive, Brian Wilson-indebted orchestrations and borderline madness thrives a Spartan post punker. He just has PG Tourettes and A.D.D. like everyone else in Sunderland.
