Gram Rabbit
Cultivation
(Stinky)
What the hell?
Gram Rabbit apparently spend a lot of time in the desert. There is lots of talk in their bio about their Joshua Tree, CA desert headquarters, “The Rabbit Ranch,” the struggles of living in the desert, and spreading “desert energy everywhere.” The isolation of the desert has obviously gone to their head, judging from Cultivation.
And we mean that in the best possible way because Gram Rabbit rarely sound like anyone else out there. Pieces of psychedelic rock (“Crossing Guards With Guns”), grunge (“Slopoke”), spaghetti western (“Waiting In The Country”), and pop (“Bloody Bunnies (Superficiality)”) waft through the record’s 12 songs, sometimes converging at once (“Jesus & I”). Guitarists Todd Rutherford and Eric Jonasson layer sustaining chords under the mesmerizing voice of frontwoman Jesika von Rabbit (yeah, really), but it’s the subtle touches of sample specialist Travis Cline that put Cultivation over the top, making it feel like a mushroom-fueled ride in an ice cream truck with the happy-go-lucky theme music blaring and your mind sinking into paranoia – equal parts fun and creepy as fuck.
