Mother’s Daughter & Other Songs
(Ace Fu)
The prodigal sons materialize out of thin air, delivering on the promise of some neighboring mates who gave up.
In a sense, Tunng represent what the suckers among us were craving after snatching up copies of The Beta Band’s 3 EPs. The Betas never gave us a good, full album — some fascimiles and bombs instead — and called it quits nearly a decade late. This Birmingham outfit aren’t mere replacement parts however, and they seem to harbor some of anger you wouldn’t normally associate with folksy psychedelia. Equally communal and drum-circle friendly, Mother’s Daughter & Other Songs makes the skies overcast and wickedly suck some of the air out. Despite promises “you’ll be welcome here,” Tunng’s tribal quality suggests tolerance but could threaten force should it be necessary. Cross your fingers the threat doesn’t include pulling the rug out on us. Again.
