Chatterbox
(Three Ring)
Calling him “Lithium pop,” Frankel’s label isn’t doing him any favors, appropriate as it might be.
Chatterbox mysteriously traverses familiar indie terrain between the ubiquitous Elliott Smith, Travis, Grandaddy, and Kevin Tihista, but expertly enough to drain any lingering doubts. “The Antidote” phases in and out of luxurious space rays with delicate, acoustic underpinning moving almost in a circle. The creaking “Method Actor” lifts too much of Smith’s addled rasp and harmonies, yet those are incorporated into “The Great Unknown” without being nearly that obtrusive. He’ll have to figure it out; getting off the lithium might help.
