The Subdudes CD Review
The Subdudes
Behind The Levee
(Back Porch)
New Orleans, schmew orleans: Keb’ Mo’ makes his production debut behind roots band’s fifth.
Though the recording of this album preceded the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, The Subdudes seem to have received some sort of advanced warning. Decidedly back (instead of “down”) home, Behind The Levee basks in modern soul without making too much of its gospel influences. Avoiding the traps that make so many bands leave NOLA like they recorded in a Bourbon St. tourist bar, The Subdudes breathe the city in and exhale that which they don’t need. If only the hurricane were as merciful.
