BREAKING NEWS: LOLLAPALOOZA BACK?

| January 31, 2006

Rumors continue to get louder saying Lollapalooza will return to Chicago this summer on the weekend of August 4th and a reunited Smashing Pumpkins could be a headliner.

Of course, none of this is official. A story on Billboard.com offers little more than “Chicago media reports” and a statement from D.C.-based electronic outfit Thievery Corporation saying they wouldn’t mind performing. What’s indisputable, however, is with Pitchforkmedia.com fixing on July 31st for the non-Intonation sequel to last year’s Intonation Festival and the actual Intonation planning for the week prior, summer Chicago weekends are quickly disappearing.

Combined with the Coachella Valley Music Festival returning to Indio, California the final weekend in April, Chicago needs to begin competing for national tourism dollars as well.

As for a Pumpkins reunion, Billy Corgan hasn’t updated his Web site this year. The trick will be if the prospect of returning in front of a hometown audience 30,000-strong will be too much for James Iha and D’Arcy Wretzky to refuse.
