It’s been more than five years since New York’s Yeah Yeah Yeahs have released a studio record. Their breakthrough debut, Fever To Tell, turned 15 this year, so instead of any new material, the trio has hit the road supporting a deluxe reissue of that record. The tour is playing a limited number of cities, interspersed with festival appearances, so their recent appearance at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom almost passes as an intimate engagement.

Lead singer Karen O proved that she’s still a hellion when it comes to performing live and guitarist Nick Zinner creates the perfect tsunami of sound for her to preen over, under and through. Although the taut, frenetic, 16-song set emphasized songs from the debut, it also lent itself to career spanning territory. In fact, when Karen O all but purred the line “sometimes I think I’m bigger than the sound,” the evidence of her boast was hard to contest.
