Stage Buzz – TuTu & The Pirates

| June 5, 2014
Tutu, speckRichard Speck of Tutu & The Pirates

Artifacts from Chicago’s early punk scene (pre-Effigies/Naked Raygun) aren’t very well documented in one place, though there’s plenty out there if you have an hour to Google it (2007’s You Weren’t There documentary from Regressive Films pretty much nails it).

Chicago’s punk pioneers Tutu & The Pirates emerged with some buzz in 1977 as an odd yoking of The Ramones and The Mothers Of Invention – a clash of styles for sure, but with a can’t-miss glam stage show. Performing in pop-up new wave dive bars like La Mere Vipere and O’Banion’s, TuTu and the boys were the brave soldiers who risked their safety by being punk when it was a four letter word – in a macho musical world dominated by Nuge (Ted Nugent) and The Boyzz (from Illinois).

For fans waiting for new music, Tutu & The Pirates are releasing Trail of the Great White Beaver – their first new music in years.

Friday, June 6th at Mayne Stage; with Lucky 3 Blues Band and J.D’s Revenge – Tickets are HERE.

– John Vernon
