Free Musicians Panels

Who says nothing’s free? A pair of music discussions dot the next couple of weeks with the hopes of gripping you by your green ears and teaching you what’s what in the industry.

For the first, picture your (least) favorite wedding DJ bellowing, “All the ladies . . . all the single ladies to the dancefloor.” March 1st at the Harold Washington Library’s video theater (lower level) is dedicated to Women In Rock 2008, with three symposiums beginning at 10:30 a.m. hosted by the Women’s History Committee Of Chicago Public Library. The first panel is “Rock Stories: Women Who Document Music” followed by “I’m In The Band: Women Who Live To Rock” at 1 p.m. and “Behind The Curtain: Women Who Rock The Music Business” at 3.

Bro’s are then welcome to join all the ladies, all the single ladies March 10th at Chicago Cultural Center (77 E. Randolph) at the latest Chicago Music Commission forum, “Building An Audience.” Beginning with a networking session at 6 p.m., the topic du mois is learning the basics of publicity, promotion, and marketing as far as landing your first shows, initial recordings, and creating an audience both online and in person. The moderator will be Invisible Records’ owner/ex-Killing Joke, Ministry, and Pigface member Martin Atkins, who recently published Tour: Smart And Break The Band.

Women in Rock 2008: A Day of Panel Discussions

Have women installed themselves so firmly into the various roles of the music business that we don’t notice them anymore? Is talking about ‘women in rock’ a self-ghettoizing exercise or simply a tired topic?

This year we asked 13 women actively engaged in various facets of the music business to do it again! Musicians, writers, promoters, film makers, photographers and more will converge on the Harold Washington Library Center on Saturday March 1st to talk all things Rock.
