Some of the advances being made in the electronics industry, especially in the digital domain, are contributing a great deal of change in the guitar effects industry!  I find that some of these new advancements are difficult to use and comprehend in a live setting, so I still rely on a few tried and true pedals.  A tuner, autowah, OD, Distortion, and simple delay...  those suit most of my needs very well...

You know though, it is still hard to beat a crunchy tube amp and a well constructed guitar...
